- On the basis of his observations Galilei supported the heliocentric Copernican
- conception of the universe in his 1632 book 'Dialogo'.
- Galilei was brought before the Inquisition at the age of 69 and had to retract
- his heliocentric teachings. Moreover, he had to spend the rest of his life under
- house arrest. 'Dialogue' was banned and publishers were forbidden to print
- anything written by Galilei. At the trial he is reputed to have said 'Eppur si
- muove', 'But it does move.'
-
- The 'Dialogue' was translated into Latin outside Italy and scholars all over
- Europe were able to read it. Thus the heliocentric system gained a firm
- foothold.
