  1. On the basis of his observations Galilei supported the heliocentric Copernican 
  2. conception of the universe in his 1632 book 'Dialogo'.
  3. Galilei was brought before the Inquisition at the age of 69 and had to retract 
  4. his heliocentric teachings. Moreover, he had to spend the rest of his life under 
  5. house arrest. 'Dialogue' was banned and publishers were forbidden to print 
  6. anything written by Galilei. At the trial he is reputed to have said 'Eppur si 
  7. muove', 'But it does move.'

  9. The 'Dialogue' was translated into Latin outside Italy and scholars all over 
  10. Europe were able to read it. Thus the heliocentric system gained a firm 
  11. foothold.
